Another rendering observation:

the text in both places are with the same font/size. on the other hand, there is very little difference in the rendering when it is displayed in the menu or in tree.

It seems that simplified Windows 2000 theme you are using causes such behavior.
Though I cannot reproduce the issue on Windows 8 even with some simple themes.
I will check the rendering issues a bit later.
Could you try reproducing this issue with default Windows 7 theme?

Non-opaque window is the cause of the second text rendering issue. Unluckily i cannot do anything about it because rendering options, font and size of the text are actually the same in both cases. It seems to be some low-level rendering issue, probably in JDK.

indeed, it happens only with "best performance" theme. please discard these issues. mostly it is within JDK scope as you mentioned.

I guess its just some window rendering issues in that mode.
By the way, could you try that issue with different JDKs (6/7)?
I bet it might not appear in one of them.

Should now be solved after lots of updates for menu/popup background.
